The Mississippi congressional delegation has announced its support for Governor Tate Reeves' request for a federal disaster declaration after severe weather impacted the state on March 14 and 15. The state's delegation sent a letter to President Trump, seeking his approval for a major disaster declaration aimed at providing federal aid for 14 affected counties.

The communication, signed by U.S. Senators Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde-Smith, alongside U.S. Representatives Bennie Thompson, Trent Kelly, Michael Guest, and Mike Ezell, highlights the need for urgent federal assistance to supplement state efforts. The declaration, if granted, would enable access to additional federal resources to aid recovery.

"In the wake of recent extreme weather that brought severe thunderstorms and violent tornadoes to the State of Mississippi, we request your full consideration of Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves' request for a federal disaster declaration,” reads the letter from the lawmakers.

The request follows a preliminary disaster assessment that outlines significant damages, including the tragic loss of seven lives, injuries, and extensive property destruction. The report details $18.2 million in documented damages, with numerous homes destroyed or severely damaged.

"Available resources from state and local governments and volunteer organizations are inadequate to meet the state’s recovery needs. Significant federal assistance and cooperation are needed for Mississippi to rebuild,” the letter further states.

The damage assessment mentions at least 20 counties experienced extreme weather, with impacts including tornadoes, flash floods, and even an earthquake near Magee, Mississippi. The sought-after Individual Assistance would target 14 counties while Public Assistance is proposed for 17 counties.

The letter concludes with an acknowledgment of previous support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and anticipates continued agency assistance in rebuilding efforts.
