U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, led a hearing on the nomination of Stephen A. Feinberg for Deputy Secretary of Defense. The hearing focused on the current national security challenges posed by countries like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea.
Chairman Wicker highlighted Feinberg's private sector experience as an asset for advancing efficiency and accountability at the Department of Defense. He mentioned his defense policy reports, "21st Century Peace Through Strength" and "Freedom’s Forge," which emphasize reforming the Pentagon to enhance military capabilities.
Feinberg is the CEO of Cerberus Capital Management and has previously served as Chairman of President Trump's Intelligence Oversight Board and Intelligence Advisory Board from 2018 to 2021.
"If confirmed, Mr. Feinberg would join the Department of Defense during the most dangerous security environment since World War II," stated Wicker. He emphasized that Feinberg would play a critical role in addressing threats from an emerging coalition between China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea.
Wicker expressed concern over declining defense investments since the Cold War era and described various issues within U.S. military forces that need urgent attention. He noted that Feinberg's career in fixing large organizations makes him well-suited for this role.
Feinberg's work spans international economics and national security efforts such as Subic Bay acquisition and counter-Huawei initiatives. Wicker remarked that although the Deputy Secretary may not be frequently in the news, their role is vital for managing day-to-day operations at the Pentagon.
"In Mr. Feinberg, President Trump has found a deputy who combines cutting-edge private sector skills with a thorough understanding of U.S. national security interests," said Wicker.
The committee looks forward to hearing Feinberg's views on departmental issues and his thoughts on proposals like "21st Century Peace Through Strength" and "Restoring Freedom’s Forge: American Innovation Unleashed." These initiatives aim to reform Pentagon operations by reducing bureaucracy and enhancing military capabilities efficiently.
Wicker concluded by expressing confidence in Feinberg's ability to contribute significantly to focusing on lethality, efficiency, speed, and accountability within the Department of Defense.
