Reestablishing merit-based hiring practices across federal agencies is the focus of a new legislative effort supported by U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith from Mississippi. The legislation, known as the Restore Merit to Government Service Act (S.591), aims to codify an executive order from former President Trump intended to end discriminatory hiring practices within the federal government.

Introduced by U.S. Senator Rick Scott of Florida, S.591 seeks to ensure that only the most qualified candidates are employed in federal positions for the benefit of American citizens. "I think it’s apparent to many Americans that their government’s hiring practices have been warped by prioritizing radical social agendas over the basic qualifications needed to be an effective federal employee," said Senator Hyde-Smith, expressing her support for the bill.

Senator Scott further emphasized, “For years, Democrats have pushed radicalized policies into the innermost workings of our government, spending tax dollars against Americans’ own best interests." He added his belief that hiring based on merit is crucial for optimal functioning of federal agencies and encouraged colleagues to support this initiative.

The bill aligns with actions taken by President Trump early in his term when he signed executive orders aimed at reforming federal hiring processes and eliminating illegal discrimination.

Additional support for S.591 comes from U.S. Senators Marsha Blackburn from Tennessee and Tommy Tuberville from Alabama. The proposed legislation has been sent to the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee for consideration.

In related efforts, Senator Hyde-Smith has also backed another piece of legislation called the Dismantle DEI Act of 2025 (S.382). Introduced by U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt from Missouri, this act intends to solidify President Trump's order removing diversity, equity, and inclusion mandates implemented during Biden's administration.
