U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), chair of the Senate Pro-Life Caucus, issued a statement today criticizing another scheduled vote by Senate Democrats on legislation concerning assisted reproductive technology. The legislation has been portrayed as protecting access to in vitro fertilization (IVF).
"Here we go again with more time-wasting show votes intended to prop up vulnerable Democrats ahead of an election. I consistently maintain my support for IVF and, as chair of the Pro-Life Caucus, I will always fight for the lives of children," Hyde-Smith stated. "Instead of taking up flawed legislation the Senate already voted on weeks ago, a better use of time might be to consider truly critical legislation like appropriations bills or the National Defense Authorization Act. Sadly, for the American people, the Senate Majority Leader has refused to bring any of them to the floor."
The Senate previously blocked S.4445 in early June and is set to take a procedural vote on the bill at 3:30 p.m. Eastern/2:30 p.m. Central on Tuesday, Sept. 17.
Hyde-Smith, who blocked other similar legislation regarding IVF in February, has introduced and cosponsored multiple life-affirming bills in the 118th Congress.
