U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith from Mississippi has condemned the Democratic-led suppression of the impeachment trial for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The Senator, who has visited the U.S.-Mexico border multiple times as a member of the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, expressed her strong sentiments regarding the situation.
In her statement, Senator Hyde-Smith criticized Senate Democrats for their actions, stating, "Senate Democrats insulted the United States Senate as an institution and, more importantly, the American people by suppressing the impeachment trial for Secretary Mayorkas and denying the right of every American to hear the evidence." She further added, “Let’s be clear, they wanted this trial stopped because it would have been politically inconvenient for them.”
Highlighting the issues at the border, Senator Hyde-Smith pointed out Secretary Mayorkas’ alleged failure to enforce laws and protect American citizens by securing the borders. She emphasized the significant number of illegal immigrants allowed into the country under his watch, stating, "There’s no hiding the more than 9 million illegal immigrants allowed into our country under his watch, and the growing costs to taxpayers who are forced to provide services for them." Additionally, she mentioned the impact of illegal drugs and crimes committed by illegal immigrants.
Concluding her statement, Senator Hyde-Smith asserted, “The American people deserve better than what they got today from Senate Democrats and by what we’ve been saddled with by Secretary Mayorkas and the Biden administration.”
The impeachment trial for Secretary Mayorkas was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives in February, but it faced suppression in the Senate.
