U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, presided over a hearing on May 1, 2025, to assess the qualifications of three senior Department of Defense nominees. The hearing aimed to evaluate their suitability for key roles within the department.
In his opening remarks, Chairman Wicker emphasized the importance of experienced leadership in confronting global challenges. He stated, “We face an axis of aggressors that deepen their cooperation every day… We need qualified people who are willing to step up and serve during these dangerous times.”
The first nominee discussed was Matthew Lohmeier, nominated for Undersecretary of the Air Force. Wicker highlighted Lohmeier’s service in both the Air Force and Space Force and noted his stance against divisive agendas previously present in the Department of Defense. “This role requires a steady, unifying presence,” said Wicker.
Justin Overbaugh was nominated for Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security. His extensive background as an Army officer in intelligence and special operations was recognized by Wicker as fitting for overseeing intelligence functions at the DoD. Wicker expressed interest in Overbaugh’s plans to enhance defense intelligence capabilities.
Lastly, Daniel Zimmerman was nominated as Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs. His role would involve advising on matters related to Europe, NATO, and Russia. With experience as an intelligence officer and work in Congress, Zimmerman is seen as well-suited for managing NATO relations and addressing Russian activities.
Chairman Wicker concluded by expressing anticipation for each nominee’s testimony regarding their priorities and strategies if confirmed.
