U.S. Senator Roger Wicker delivered a speech in the Senate acknowledging President Donald Trump’s efforts toward achieving peace in Ukraine and condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin for his actions in the ongoing conflict. In his remarks, Wicker stated that Trump has continually offered opportunities for peace, but these have been met with aggression from Putin. “Every time Ukraine and the United States have extended the hand of peace, President Putin has responded with aggression,” Wicker said.
Wicker highlighted President Trump’s recent criticism of Putin’s actions in civilian areas, quoting Trump: “There was no reason for Putin to be shooting missiles into civilian areas, cities, and towns, over the last few days.” The Senator praised Trump for this stance, adding, “President Trump is right: Too many people are dying.”
Wicker also noted that others have echoed the President’s sentiments, citing Senator Kennedy of Louisiana who said, “Putin thinks that America has taken the bullet train to Chump Town.” General Jack Keane, speaking on Fox News, further supported Trump’s efforts, questioning which side truly seeks peace.
Wicker commended the Trump administration for setting a timeline for Putin to demonstrate an interest in peace, referencing a recent announcement by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Wicker expressed skepticism that Putin would embrace peace, as evidence gathered suggests otherwise.
He underscored the bipartisan effort in the Senate, with 50 senators introducing the Sanctioning Russia Act of 2025. “Twenty-five Republicans and 25 Democrats have introduced legislation that will impose primary and secondary sanctions against Russia,” he said. This step aims to pressure Russia and its supporters into engaging in genuine peace talks.
Throughout his speech, Wicker consistently attributed responsibility for the conflict to Putin: “Putin repeatedly bombs civilians. He has forged a trail of broken promises.” Wicker concluded by agreeing with Trump’s assessment that Putin “has to be dealt with differently.”
