A Vicksburg man has admitted guilt in a case involving possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Marquette Cornell McCroy, 42, was apprehended with a firearm during a traffic stop in Vicksburg. As the driver and only person in the vehicle, McCroy attempted to escape on foot, discarding the weapon as he fled.
McCroy’s prior felony conviction prohibits him from possessing firearms. He is set to be sentenced on February 6, 2025, facing up to ten years in prison. The final sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge who will consider U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other legal factors.
The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee and Special Agent in Charge Robert Eikhoff of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The investigation is being conducted by the Vicksburg Police Department and the FBI.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Bert Carraway is handling the prosecution of this case. This legal action is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative that unites various levels of law enforcement with communities to curb violent crime and gun violence, aiming for safer neighborhoods. On May 26, 2021, an enhanced strategy for reducing violent crime was introduced under PSN focusing on community trust, support for violence prevention organizations, strategic enforcement priorities, and outcome measurement.
