Jackson State University opened the Andre Dawson Classic with a narrow 3-2 win over Texas Southern on Friday at the Jackie Robinson Training Center in Vero Beach, Florida.
The Tigers overcame a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning when Hederick Torres delivered a two-run single to left, giving Jackson State its first lead. The hit scored Tyree Reed and Edwin Lemus Hudson Jr. Torres went 2-for-4 and drove in all three of Jackson State’s runs.
Christian Delgado earned the win for Jackson State by pitching two scoreless innings in relief and recording one strikeout. Jaedeyn Edwards secured his first career save by closing out the final two innings and allowing only three hits. Starter Kade Walker pitched five innings, surrendering two runs on two hits while striking out four.
In addition to Torres’ performance at the plate, Reed, Hudson, and Diego Melendez each collected a hit for Jackson State.
Texas Southern took an early lead in the first inning with Jonathan Trejo’s RBI single. The teams traded runs until Torres’ decisive sixth-inning hit put Jackson State ahead for good.
