U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), a member of the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, criticized an executive order signed by President Biden concerning illegal immigration. The senator described the move as a belated acknowledgment of breached U.S. border security since Biden assumed office.
“President Biden’s border executive order is no more than an election-year ruse that will do little to lessen the effects of his disastrous policies. He is basically just dimming the wattage of the giant ‘OPEN’ sign that has allowed millions of illegal crossings. This order won’t close asylum loopholes, it won’t finish the border wall, and it won’t end catch-and-release, meaning our country will still have tens of thousands crossing the border,” Hyde-Smith said. “I’m not buying this executive order issued by a politically-desperate administration that has for too long refused to acknowledge the crisis it created.”
Hyde-Smith noted that her recent visits to the southern border reinforce her stance on this issue. She highlighted that this executive order follows what she termed a "sham vote" last month, intended to provide political cover for Senate Democrats amid their support for failed border security and immigration policies since January 2021.
Nearly a year ago, Hyde-Smith co-sponsored a resolution aimed at overturning President Biden’s Circumvention of Lawful Pathways rule. According to Hyde-Smith, this rule was designed to appear tough on illegal migration but contained numerous exceptions and facilitated unlawful parole programs established by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security without congressional approval.
