2021-22 School Year: What were the backgrounds of Jackson Public School District students?

Black students made up 91.4% of the 19,348 students enrolled in Jackson Public School District schools during the 2021-22 school year, making them the most represented ethnicity, according to the Mississippi Department of Education.

This is an 8.8% decrease from the previous school year.

Murrah High School had the highest enrollment in the district with 1,362 students.

A snapshot of Jackson Public School District schools showed 91.4% of students were Black, 1.8% were Hispanic, 0.7% were white, and 0.4% multiracial.

Jackson Public School District roughly covers 48 schools and has a main office in Jackson.

Mississippi has continually struggled with public education. The most recent Report Card on American Education, from a right-leaning think tank, gave the state a C-. This is consistent with ratings stretching back nearly a decade.

The nonpartisan Education Week also ranked Mississippi schools as C- in their most recent analysis.
