Young records double-double in Jackson State's 61-57 win against Prairie View A&M
Coltie Young registered a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Jackson State men's basketball team past the Prairie View A&M Panthers 61-57 at home Monday.
The Tigers (11-18, 10-6) had three players score in double figures, led by Romelle Mansel, who had 14 points and two blocks. Young added a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds and Chase Adams helped out with 10 points, six assists and three steals.
Jackson State out-rebounded Prairie View A&M 39-25 in Monday's game, paced by Young's 11 boards.
The Jackson State defense held Prairie View A&M shooters to only 30.2 percent from the field. The Tigers also kept Yahuza Rasas to 4-of-15 shooting in the game. The Panthers did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only nine offensive rebounds and scored seven second chance points while Jackson State pulled down 31 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After falling behind 14-4, Jackson State went on a 12-0 run with 12:30 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Ken Evans, to take a 16-14 lead. The Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 24-23 advantage. Jackson State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 18 of its 24 points close to the basket.
Prairie View A&M proceeded to take a 30-26 lead before Jackson State went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Adams' jumper, to seize a 34-30 lead with 15:00 to go in the contest. The Tigers held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 61-57 win. Jackson State shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting five shots from deep to score 15 of its 37 points.
