The Belhaven University volleyball team competed against Agnes Scott College and Berea College on Saturday. The Blazers split the doubleheader defeating Agnes Scott 3-0 before falling in a five set thriller against Berea. With the split, the Blazers improve to 9-16 overall and 6-8 in conference play.
In the first match of the day the Blazers squared off against Agnes Scott and dominated from the opening serve defeats the Scotties 3-0. Belhaven jumped out to a commanding 15-6 run before the Scotties took a timeout. Agnes Scott tried to rally back but came up short as the Blazers took the 25-18 first set victory.
Agnes Scott took a lead early on in the second set but Belhaven stormed back to grab the 15-13 advantage midway through the second set. After a 10-5 run to close out the second set, the Blazers grabbed the 25-18 set victory and take the 2-0 lead.
After a back and forth opening of the third set, the Blazers caught a spark and took the 18-10 advantage late in the third set. The Green and Gold stood their ground to secure the 25-15 third set victory as the Blazers defeats the Scotties 3-0.
Ellie Jones led the Blazers with 12 Kills and three service aces. Defensively, Miriam Ateca posted a team-high 17 assists and Paige Broussard ended the contest with 14 digs.
In the second match of the day, the Blazers faced Berea College but came up short in a five set showdown against the Mountaineers. Berea dominated the first earning the 25-11 set victory over the Blazers. Looking to bounce back, the Blazers jumped out to an 18-12 advantage midway through the second set. The Blazers continued to score points to secure the 25-18 second set victory over Berea to even the contest up at 1-1.
Belhaven opened the third set going on a 7-2 run, but the Mountaineers climbed back into the contest to take the 15-13 lead. The Blazers tried to rally back but Berea kept their foot on the pedal to take the 25-17 set victory and gain the 2-1 advantage in the match.
The Blazers struggled early on in the fourth set as Berea took the 14-5 lead. After an 11-3 run by the Green and Gold the Blazers found themselves only down by one point headed into the last points of the fourth set. BU continued to push the points to capture the 25-23 set victory over the Mountaineers to force a match deciding fifth set. Berea came out of the fifth set firing on all cylinders and took an 8-2 lead before the teams switched sides to close out the fifth set. The Mountaineers' offense was too strong for the Green and Gold as Berea earned the 15-6 fifth set victory and the match 3-2.
Jeslian Vazquez and Ellie Jones led Belhaven with 10 kills apiece. Additionally, Vazquez had a team-high three service aces and Jones tallied three total blocks. Miriam Ateca concluded the night with 22 assists and Paige Broussard once again lead the Blazers with 18 digs.
The Blazers will return to action on October 29th against Covenant and Wesleyan in Lookout Mountain, Ga. for the final two matches before postseason play. First serve is set for 11:00 a.m. CST.
