U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith delivered a tribute to the late Jeanne Luckey in the U.S. Senate, acknowledging her significant contributions and legacy. Luckey, who passed away on November 7, 2024, was recognized for her leadership roles on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and beyond.

Hyde-Smith’s remarks are recorded in the Congressional Record: “Madam President, I rise today with a deep sense of respect, admiration, and sadness to honor the remarkable life of Jeanne Luckey. Her legacy of service, strength, and compassion will leave a lasting impact on Mississippi, our nation, and beyond.”

Jeanne Luckey was described as “a proud daughter of Biloxi, Mississippi,” dedicated to her family and community. She played a pivotal role in Mississippi’s Republican Party as president of the Mississippi Federation of Republican Women, co-chair of the state Republican Party, and Republican National Committeewoman.

Despite facing personal challenges after a car accident post-Hurricane Katrina that left her in a wheelchair, Luckey continued her work with determination. Hyde-Smith highlighted this resilience: “She kept working… always finding a way to move forward.”

Beyond politics, Luckey was committed to education in Mississippi. As part of the Board of Trustees for the Institutions of Higher Learning, she worked towards making universities more inclusive.

Her husband Alwyn remarked on her character: “She made me a better person than I otherwise would have been.” Hyde-Smith echoed this sentiment by stating that those who knew Jeanne were profoundly impacted by her wisdom and kindness.

Jeanne is survived by her husband Alwyn; daughters Laurel and Taylor; and grandchildren Cornelius and Toxie Ray. Hyde-Smith concluded by expressing condolences: “Mississippi has lost an amazing woman and a true leader.”
