U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith has voted for the Water Resources Development Act of 2024, a legislative measure aimed at enhancing water infrastructure across Mississippi. The act, which passed with overwhelming support in the Senate by a vote of 97-1, authorizes federal resources to improve waterways, flood control systems, ports, and other related projects within the state.
The legislation encompasses U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects nationwide that focus on navigation improvements, flood management, ecosystem restoration, and clean water infrastructure. With its passage in the Senate, the bill now awaits signing into law.
Hyde-Smith emphasized the significance of this legislation for Mississippi and beyond. “This legislation is important to the well-being of Mississippi and the entire nation. Army Corps of Engineers activities in Mississippi are directly linked to the well-being of our citizens and the state’s economy,” she stated. She also committed to securing necessary funding for these projects in her role on both the Senate Appropriations Committee and its Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development.
Hyde-Smith backed provisions that would enable collaboration between federal agencies like the Army Corps of Engineers and local officials to enhance flood control measures, inland port facilities, wastewater infrastructure, conservation efforts, and coastal resilience strategies.
Mississippi stands to benefit from several authorized projects included in this bill as it moves towards becoming law.
