Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker and Ranking Member Jack Reed have formally requested an investigation by the Acting Inspector General of the Department of Defense into a Signal chat incident involving senior Trump Administration officials. Wicker and Reed’s letter to Inspector General Steven A. Stebbins calls for a full assessment and inquiry.
The incident reportedly involved Jeffrey Goldberg, Editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, being included in a group chat on Signal with National Security Council members. The chat allegedly contained classified information about military actions in Yemen. Wicker and Reed expressed concerns about the use of non-government networks to discuss sensitive information, especially with individuals lacking proper clearance.
Their request outlines several areas for inquiry: the details and consequences of the Signal chat, adherence to Department of Defense policies on sharing classified information, and the differences in policies among various government entities involved with the National Security Council. The committee also seeks any recommendations for addressing the identified issues and asks for a classified annex to the responses.
Wicker and Reed wrote, “The Senate Armed Services Committee will work with you to schedule a briefing immediately upon completion of your review.”
