It was passed with unanimous consent, aligning with Vicksburg’s year-long bicentennial festivities.
Senator Hyde-Smith remarked, “Vicksburg’s bicentennial is a moment to reflect on and celebrate the city’s extraordinary legacy, and I’m happy the U.S. Senate has formally recognized the significance of this anniversary.” Hyde-Smith emphasized Vicksburg’s enduring role as a center of commerce, culture, and faith in Mississippi, and dedicated the resolution to those who have shaped the city.
Senator Wicker added, “Vicksburg has played a central role in the story of Mississippi and the United States.” He pointed out the city’s vibrant history and anticipated it would continue to play a significant part in Mississippi’s tourism and technological advancement.
Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs, Jr. expressed his gratitude, stating, “For 200 years, Vicksburg has stood as a symbol of resilience, innovation, and community. I am honored that Senator Hyde-Smith and the U.S. Senate have recognized our city’s rich history and enduring contributions to Mississippi and the nation.”
The resolution honors Vicksburg’s impact on Mississippi and the nation, highlighting its historical events, notable citizens, industries, and cultural influences. It designates 2025 as the “Vicksburg Bicentennial” and encourages citizens to participate in the year-long celebration.
