Daeshun Ruffin reached a significant career milestone by scoring his 1,000th point during Jackson State’s 82-78 win over Prairie View A&M on Saturday night at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.
Jackson State (4-13, 3-1 SWAC) led for most of the game before Prairie View A&M took its first lead with less than seven minutes left. The Tigers were down 78-75 with under two minutes to play when Ruffin scored a lay-up while being fouled, achieving his 1,000th career point. He made the free throw to tie the game at 78. Ruffin then put Jackson State ahead for good with another lay-up, and Raevon Thomas secured the win with a dunk in the final seconds.
Ruffin finished with 23 points and matched his career-high with 10 assists, marking his second consecutive double-double. He shot 53.3 percent from the field and made five of six free throws. Dorian McMillian contributed 16 points, hitting three three-pointers and all of his free throws.
Dionjahe Thomas recorded his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jayme Mitchell Jr. added nine points and eight rebounds, while Raevon Thomas had eight points and nine rebounds.
Jackson State shot 45.3 percent from the floor overall and made ten three-pointers on 35.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The team also converted 70 percent of its free throws. Prairie View A&M was held to under 38 percent shooting from the field.
Prairie View A&M’s Dontae Horn led all scorers with 38 points, while Cory Wells had a double-double before fouling out. Tai’Reon Joseph, who leads SWAC in scoring, was held scoreless in limited action.
Jackson State assisted on more than half its baskets and outrebounded Prairie View A&M by eleven boards. The Tigers also outscored their opponent in the paint and received strong contributions from their bench.
The Tigers will finish their homestand against Texas Southern on Monday night at Lee E. Williams AAC.
