Pegues and Brown record double-doubles as JSU falls to Arkansas-Pine Bluff

Rhema Pegues and Mikayla Brown each recorded double-doubles for the Jackson State University women’s basketball team, but their efforts were not enough as the Tigers lost to Arkansas-Pine Bluff 74-68 on Thursday evening in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

Pegues led the team with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while also contributing five assists. Brown added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jada Patton provided support off the bench with 13 points.

Jackson State finished with four players scoring in double figures. The team registered a total of 15 assists on its 25 made field goals, with Pegues leading in that category.

Defensively, Jackson State forced Arkansas-Pine Bluff into 15 turnovers, which resulted in 14 points for the Tigers. Angel Wilkinson led JSU individually with four steals.

The game started unfavorably for Jackson State (6-16 overall, 4-6 SWAC), as they trailed by double digits after the first quarter and went into halftime down by 18 points. UAPB extended its lead to as much as 23 before a late run by JSU cut the deficit to four points with just over half a minute remaining. However, Arkansas-Pine Bluff held on for the win.

Despite losing the game, Jackson State had a significant rebounding advantage at 51-26 and collected 23 offensive boards. The Tigers also received strong contributions from their bench, which scored a combined total of 27 points.

The Tigers will next travel to Itta Bena to face Mississippi Valley State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
