Mitchell’s double-double powers Jackson State past Mississippi Valley State

Jayme Mitchell Jr. led Jackson State to a 97-81 win over Mississippi Valley State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game held at the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex in Itta Bena, Mississippi.

Mitchell, stepping in for Daeshun Ruffin who missed the contest, recorded his first career double-double with a career-high 39 points and 13 rebounds. He made 9 of 19 shots from the field and converted 17 of 19 free throw attempts. Dorian McMillian contributed 23 points and four assists, while Dionjahe Thomas added his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Jackson State shot 41.8 percent from the floor (28-of-67) and made 34.3 percent of their three-point attempts (12-of-35). The team also excelled at the free throw line, hitting 82.9 percent (29-of-35), and outrebounded Mississippi Valley State by a margin of 52-30.

For Mississippi Valley State, Michael James scored a team-high 32 points and Daniel Mayfield added 30.

At halftime, Jackson State led by seven points after shooting 40.6 percent from the field and making five three-pointers out of nineteen attempts. The Tigers maintained their lead in the second half with improved shooting from beyond the arc and consistent performance at the free throw line.

Jackson State will conclude its road trip on Monday night with a game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
