The Office of Student Success at Mississippi College announced on Apr. 23 that Kayla Acklin and Christel Cater have been named the 2025-26 “Student Success Champions” for their commitment to supporting student achievement.

The annual award recognizes one full-time faculty member and one full-time staff member who demonstrate exceptional efforts in promoting student success through collaborative participation across campus. The initiative aims to highlight individuals whose work fosters a supportive environment for students both academically and personally.

Stephanie Carmicle-Davis, assistant provost for student success, said, “Student success belongs to everyone. We are excited to highlight our partners across campus for their hard work to support, encourage and connect students across campus.”

Acklin, chair and assistant professor in the Department of Counseling, was recognized for her dedication to engaging with students beyond traditional office hours, helping them during critical periods such as clinical work and exam preparation. One nomination noted her commitment: “(She) actively connect(s) students with institutional resources, including mental health services, student success and the Writing Center, while normalizing help-seeking. (Her) work reflects a passion for empowering students to persist, achieve, thrive and develop their identity as professional counselors.” Acklin said she is “truly honored” by the recognition. She added: “Student success goes far beyond grades – it’s about helping students develop the judgment, self-awareness and clinical presence required to do this work well.”

Cater serves as licensure and certification coordinator in the Department of Teacher Education and Leadership. She was nominated for her role in establishing a probation program that assists education majors needing extra support with program requirements. Cater said: “It means a tremendous amount to be recognized for working with education students to meet the necessary licensure requirements set by the Mississippi Department of Education… My goal is to ensure they can achieve their aspirations of serving their communities as K-12 educators.” Multiple nominations highlighted her individual attention toward struggling students: “When students are struggling… Mrs. Cater works with them individually…to develop a plan to help students reach their goals.”

This marks the fourth year that Mississippi College has presented these awards. Previous recipients include Ashley Krason (modern languages), Taylor Hathorn (English), Beth Barlow (biological sciences), Marcy Hutton (student-athlete development), Ivan Parke (Christian Studies), and Drew Ahlrich (undergraduate admissions).

The recognition underscores ongoing efforts at Mississippi College to create an environment where faculty and staff play key roles in advancing student achievement.
