Jackson State University’s track and field teams had a strong showing on the first day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Indoor Track and Field Championship in Birmingham, Alabama.
Freshman Malayna Mallory set a new school record and secured first place in the women’s weight throw with a mark of 17.65 meters. Korbin Lewis also broke a school record in the men’s pole vault, clearing 4.42 meters to earn a bronze medal.
Kaiden Berry took gold in the men’s shot put event with a throw of 16.39 meters. In the men’s 3,000-meter race, Godfrey Kimutai finished second with a time of 8:35.64, while Eric Lagat placed third at 8:45.52. Both athletes achieved personal bests in this event.
Other Jackson State athletes set new personal or season bests during the day across multiple events. These included Gabrielle Langford (women’s 60m and 200m), Callie Calicut (women’s 60m hurdles and 200m), Kayla Williams (women’s 60m hurdles), Ronald Huddleston (men’s 200m), Sabatiney Onyepunuka (women’s 200m), Dominic Turner (men’s 800m), Amara Hawkins-Quinones (women’s 800m), Kaylin Jackson (women’s 800m), Karina Griffin (women’s 800m), Eric Lagat (men’s mile), Collins Kibet (men’s mile and 3k), Stephy Venuti (women’s mile), Lorine Jelagat (women’s 3k) and Joan Koech (women’s 3k).
The championship will continue tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m.
