Jackson State women’s tennis team advances to SWAC semifinals after 5-0 win

The Jackson State women’s tennis team advanced to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) semifinals after a decisive 5-0 victory over Mississippi Valley on April 17 in New Orleans.

The win allows Jackson State, seeded first in the tournament, to continue its postseason run. The Tigers quickly secured their place in the next round with strong performances across both doubles and singles matches.

Paula Corbalan, who was recently named SWAC Player of the Year, and Isabella Benavides, an all-conference first team selection, clinched the doubles point for Jackson State with a 6-0 win against Lilly Gansauge and Nina Schiks. The Tigers received their second point by default before singles play began. In singles competition, Benavides won her match against Tori Carter without dropping a game (6-0, 6-0), while Mariia Iordanova achieved a similar result at number two singles. Victoria Linkovski, recognized as Newcomer of the Year, also delivered a perfect performance with a 6-0, 6-0 victory that sealed Jackson State’s progression.

The Tigers will next face fifth-seeded Florida A&M in the semifinals scheduled for tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.

With this win and several individual honors among its players this season, Jackson State continues to build momentum as it moves deeper into tournament play.
