Jackson State women’s tennis falls to Alabama State in SWAC Championship final

Jackson State University’s women’s tennis team ended its season on April 19 after a close 4-2 loss to Alabama State in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship held at the City Park Pepsi Center in New Orleans.

The match was significant as it marked the end of Jackson State’s campaign for the year, with both teams vying for the conference title. The contest saw several momentum shifts and featured strong performances from both sides.

Alabama State took an early lead by winning the doubles matches. However, Jackson State responded with determination. Paula Corbalan, named SWAC Player of the Year, secured Jackson State’s first point by defeating Diana Craciun in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Junior Helen Hernandez continued this momentum with a victory at number five singles, winning her match 6-3, 6-3 and giving Jackson State a brief lead.

The Hornets tied the score when Jovana Petrovic won her singles match at number six with scores of 6-4 and 7-6. The remaining matches were closely contested and went into three sets each. Alabama State pulled ahead by clinching court three before Kesmat El Tawil sealed their championship win with a hard-fought victory: 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.
