The Jackson State Tigers women’s tennis team was narrowly defeated by the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, with a final score of 4-3 on Friday afternoon. The Tigers now hold a 1-7 record for the season.
Jackson State lost the doubles point at the start of the match but managed to secure three victories in singles play. Four out of six singles matches went to three sets.
Tiara Alvarez secured the first singles point for Jackson State with a 6-3, 6-2 win at number six. Mariia Iordanova recovered after losing her first set 5-7 and won her match with scores of 6-3 and 6-2 in the following sets. Helen Hernandez earned another point for Jackson State by winning her match at number five in three sets: 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Jackson State is scheduled to return home for their next match against Sam Houston on Sunday, February 15, at 11 a.m.
