The Jackson State University women’s basketball team secured a road victory against Mississippi Valley State, winning 60-54 on Saturday afternoon in Itta Bena, Mississippi.
The game began with Derrica McCall scoring a three-pointer to give Jackson State an early lead. JSU led 16-10 by the end of the first quarter, but Mississippi Valley State responded and held a 17-16 advantage going into the second period. MVSU maintained its lead throughout the second quarter and entered halftime ahead, 32-30.
After halftime, MVSU extended its advantage as Sydnei Marshall scored a layup and converted a free throw after drawing a foul. Jackson State then narrowed the gap and tied the game at 35 following a layup from Angel Wilkinson. Shortly after, Rhema Pegues hit a three-pointer to give JSU a 38-35 lead. The Tigers ended the third quarter up 47-40.
In the fourth quarter, Jackson State started strong with a 7-2 run and maintained control for the rest of the game, ultimately securing the win.
Jackson State shot nearly 70 percent from the free throw line and made 40 percent of its field goal attempts. Jada Patton led the team with 14 points, four rebounds, and one block. Angel Wilkinson contributed 12 points and four rebounds, while Rhema Pegues added ten points and five rebounds.
The Tigers outscored their opponents in several areas including points in the paint (28), bench points (19), points off turnovers (18), fast break points (11), and second chance points (nine). Mississippi Valley State was led by Sydnei Marshall with 14 points and Desiree Smith who grabbed seven rebounds. MVSU shot just under 33 percent from the field but made over 71 percent of their free throws.
Jackson State will return home to face Bethune-Cookman at Lee E. Williams AAC on Thursday evening at 6 p.m.
