Jackson State women’s basketball defeats Prairie View A&M behind Wilkinson’s strong performance

The Jackson State University women’s basketball team secured a 63-59 victory over Prairie View A&M on Thursday night in Prairie View, Texas. The win moves the Tigers to a 10-17 overall record and 8-7 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play.

Angel Wilkinson led Jackson State with 19 points. Mikayla Brown recorded a double-double, finishing with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Jaileyah Cotton contributed 12 points for the Tigers.

Jackson State opened scoring with a jumper from Jada Patton, but Prairie View A&M responded and took an early lead. The Panthers held a 16-12 advantage after the first quarter and extended their lead to eight points midway through the second period. Jackson State tied the game at halftime after Pierre-Noelle Tchehchoua scored inside.

Both teams traded leads in the third quarter before Jackson State went ahead 44-41 entering the fourth period. Early baskets from Cotton, Tchehchoua, and Wilkinson gave JSU some breathing room in the final quarter. Prairie View A&M narrowed the gap to one point with just over four minutes remaining, but Jackson State maintained its lead until the end.

Jackson State shot 36.2 percent from the field and made two-thirds of its free throws. The team scored 30 points in the paint and capitalized on turnovers by adding 20 points off Prairie View’s mistakes.

Prairie View A&M shot slightly better at 43.1 percent from the floor. CJ Wilson led all scorers for PV with 20 points; Chrystal Schultz added 16, while Alana Shields finished with 12 points.

Next up for Jackson State is an away game against Texas Southern on Saturday at 2 p.m.
