Jackson State University’s women’s basketball team secured a 60-52 victory over Florida A&M on Saturday in Jackson, Mississippi. The Tigers limited the Rattlers to just 16.7 percent shooting from three-point range, with Florida A&M making only two of their 12 attempts from beyond the arc.
Jaileyah Cotton led Jackson State with 21 points. Jada Patton contributed nine points, eight rebounds, and five steals. Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua added nine points and eight rebounds off the bench.
Jackson State narrowly out-rebounded Florida A&M by a margin of 38-37, with Tcheuhchoua leading the team in boards. The Tigers collected 14 offensive rebounds and converted them into 10 second-chance points.
The defensive effort was key for Jackson State, as they held Florida A&M to just 36.8 percent shooting overall and limited Cornelia Ellington to four field goals on 14 attempts for nine points.
After trailing early in the first quarter, Jackson State went on an 8-0 run late in the period to take a lead into the break. Despite losing their advantage in the second quarter and entering halftime down by five, the Tigers regained momentum after halftime with another run highlighted by a three-pointer from Cotton.
The teams were tied at 42 heading into the fourth quarter before Jackson State closed out the game with an 8-0 run capped by a layup from Cotton, securing their win as time expired. The Tigers took advantage of seven turnovers by Florida A&M in the final quarter, converting those opportunities into seven points.
Statistically, Jackson State made seven of its fifteen three-point attempts and shot nearly 79 percent from the free throw line. The team scored 23 points off of Florida A&M’s 21 turnovers and finished with advantages in paint scoring (22), bench production (11), second-chance opportunities (10), and fast-break points (9).
Next up for Jackson State is an away game against Alcorn State scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
