The Jackson State University volleyball team faced Texas Southern in a close match on Monday night at the Health & Physical Education Arena in Houston, ultimately losing 3–2 (23–25, 27–25, 25–20, 24–26, 14–16). The contest was one of the most competitive for Jackson State this season and included 30 ties and 10 lead changes.
Jayden James led Jackson State’s offense with a match-high of 23 kills, adding 11 digs and an ace for a total of 24 points. Kyra Dove contributed nine kills while hitting .643 and recorded four blocks. Makenzie Washington had ten kills with a .409 hitting percentage, and Katejion Robinson added eleven kills.
Setters Karys Dove (29 assists, ten digs) and Naija Gadis (25 assists, five digs) ran a dual-setter system that distributed plays across several scoring options. Defensive efforts were led by Kymorah Carter who finished with fifteen digs and three service aces.
Jackson State completed the match with totals of sixty-five kills, nine service aces, six blocks, a .197 hitting percentage, and eighty points over five sets.
In the opening set, JSU took an early lead but Texas Southern closed strong to win the frame. The Tigers responded in the second set with four service aces—two from Maya Reeves—and secured an extra-point victory. JSU then took control in the third set before Texas Southern narrowly won both the fourth and fifth sets to claim the match.
After this road game loss against SWAC-leading Texas Southern (now 4–0 in conference play), Jackson State moves to a record of three wins and eleven losses overall (2–2 SWAC).
The Tigers are scheduled to host Alabama State on Friday at Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center for their home opener at 6 p.m.
