Jackson State University Division of Athletics announced on April 21 that it will hold a press conference to formally introduce Trey Johnson as the new head men’s basketball coach on May 4. The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Lee E. Williams Athletics & Assembly Center and is open to the public.
Johnson was named head coach on April 15 after serving as Associate Head Coach at Jackson State for four seasons. During his time in this role, he played a significant part in developing top talent and mentoring several All-Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) performers, including Jordan O’Neal, Ken Evans Jr., Dorian McMillian, and Daeshun Ruffin.
Before returning to Jackson State, Johnson began his collegiate coaching career at Alabama State University in 2020 where he served as Associate Head Coach for two seasons. There, he contributed to player development, recruiting efforts, and game strategy within the conference.
As a player, Johnson is recognized as one of the most decorated athletes in Jackson State’s history. He earned back-to-back First Team All-SWAC honors during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons and was named SWAC Player of the Year in his senior year after averaging over 27 points per game. His achievements also include leading the Tigers to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007 and being inducted into the Jackson State Sports Hall of Fame in 2020.
The university invites fans and supporters to attend the press conference or follow updates through its official social media channels.
