Jackson State track & field sets multiple personal bests at Samford Open

Jackson State University’s track and field team competed at the Samford Open in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday, achieving four top-three finishes and setting 10 personal records.

Senior athlete Terrell Dixon secured second place in the high jump with a mark of 1.94 meters, representing the highest finish for any Jackson State competitor during the event. Sedgwrick Pitts Jr., who was named Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Track Athlete of the Week last week, finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.22 seconds.

In women’s events, Nedgine Morancy placed third in the long jump with a leap of 5.54 meters—a new personal best for her. Kaylin Jackson also achieved a top-three result by finishing third in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:19.53.

The team saw eight additional athletes set new personal bests during the meet: Pitts Jr. (60m dash), Ronald Huddleston (60m dash), Korbin Lewis (pole vault), Robert Salhab III (shot put), Rickey Green III (60m hurdles), Kayla Williams (60m hurdles prelims and finals), Brynesha Bourrage (400m race), and Lorine Jelagat (3K).

After a two-week break, Jackson State’s track and field squad will return to Birmingham to participate in both the Green and Gold Invite and UAB Invite scheduled for February 6 and 7.
