The Jackson State University softball team opened Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play with a doubleheader against Florida A&M on Friday, splitting the series at one win each.

In the first game, Jackson State fell to Florida A&M 10-3. Brooklyn Morris started for the Tigers and took the loss. The Tigers managed to score two runs in the fourth inning, with Sommer Tyes hitting a sacrifice fly that brought in Jace Jackson and Meah Almaraz scoring during Morris’ at bat. Zaria Keyes added another run in the seventh inning, but Florida A&M’s offense, led by Amari Brown who went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, proved too strong. Zoryana Hughes pitched seven innings for the Rattlers, allowing three runs.

Keyes stole two bases during the game. Almaraz led Jackson State at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a double.

In the second game of the day, Jackson State secured a 3-1 victory over Florida A&M. Jorgina Gant pitched all seven innings for JSU, giving up just one run on two hits while striking out three batters. Offensively, Jace Jackson contributed with a double and an RBI while Ka’Liyah Gipson went 2-for-3 and stole two bases. Meah Almaraz also recorded an RBI single in the first inning as part of a two-run frame for JSU.

Jackson State held onto its lead throughout the game and out-hit Florida A&M five to two. The Tigers also drew four walks from Rattlers pitching and stole five bases as a team.

Florida A&M was led offensively by Neriah Lee, who went 1-for-2 with a triple. Samantha Smith took the loss for Florida A&M.

The series will conclude Saturday morning with first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m.
