Jackson State University won the first game and lost the second in a doubleheader against Florida A&M, according to an April 25 announcement. The games took place Saturday as part of Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
The split results highlight Jackson State’s ability to start strong but also show challenges in maintaining momentum across both games. The Tigers secured a close 3-2 victory in the opener before falling 11-3 in the second contest.
In Game 1, Jackson State scored all three runs during the first inning. Ka’Liyah Gipson led off with a single, stole second base, and scored on Jace Jackson’s triple. Jackson then came home on Meah Almaraz’s fielder’s choice, followed by Karli Cunningan scoring on Gabrielle Willis’ sacrifice fly. Brooklyn Morris pitched a complete game for JSU, allowing two earned runs over seven hits while striking out three batters and walking three. Gipson finished with three hits and a stolen base, while Jackson contributed two hits including her triple.
Game 2 saw another fast start from JSU as they put up three runs early thanks to Isabella Rivera’s two-run double and aggressive baserunning. However, Florida A&M responded with six runs in their half of the first inning and continued adding throughout the game for an eventual 11-3 win at V Wiggins Field. Despite giving up multiple runs, JSU played error-free defense during this matchup.
Players contributing offensively for JSU included Gipson, Almaraz, Rivera, and Beija Allen each recording hits; Morris reached base twice via walks. The Tigers also demonstrated speed with several stolen bases across both games.
The series reflects both strengths and areas for improvement as Jackson State continues its conference schedule.
