Jackson State softball sweeps HBCU Classic with dominant performances

Jackson State University’s softball team concluded the HBCU Softball Classic with two wins on Sunday in Montgomery, Alabama. The Tigers defeated Bluefield State 17-9 in six innings during the morning game and followed up with a 9-0 shutout over Claflin in the afternoon.

In the first game, Jackson State responded to an early run by Bluefield State with immediate offense. The Tigers took control in the third inning, sending 15 batters to the plate and scoring 11 runs. Avelina Mclean contributed a bases-clearing double as part of her four-RBI day. Courtney Little went 4-for-4 at the plate, recording three RBI, a triple, and reaching base every time she batted.

Zaria Keyes had two hits and stole two bases, while Beija Allen drove in two runs. Meah Almaraz added two hits and scored three times. Madison McDowell pitched four innings for Jackson State, allowing four runs on five hits and earning her first win of the season. Addison Jennings closed out the final two innings with three strikeouts.

The Tigers finished with 17 runs on 17 hits; Bluefield State recorded nine runs on nine hits.

In their second contest against Claflin, Jorgina Gant threw a complete-game shutout for Jackson State, giving up just four hits across seven innings while striking out six batters and walking one. The Tigers’ offense scored in five different innings.

Avelina Mclean drove in G. Willis for JSU’s first run in the second inning. Brooklyn Morris hit a two-run home run in the fourth to extend their lead to 3-0. Additional contributions came from Jcae Jackson (RBI double), Isabella Rivera (solo home run), Aaliysah Gomez (RBI single), and Morris again with a seventh-inning double that brought home two more runs.

Morris led offensively by going 3-for-4 with four RBI including both a homer and a double. The team also stole six bases during this game.

Next, Jackson State will compete at the Eagle Hub City Classic hosted by Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, starting Friday against Morehead State at 11:30 a.m.
