Jackson State University had five players named to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) women’s tennis all-conference teams, including three first-team selections, according to an announcement made by the conference on Apr. 16.
The recognition highlights the strong performance of Jackson State’s women’s tennis team during the season. The Tigers led all schools in total selections and received two major awards as well.
Paula Corbalan was named SWAC Player of the Year after finishing undefeated in conference singles matches, with four match-clinching wins. Corbalan also teamed up with Isabella Benavides for a 5-1 record in doubles play. Benavides herself went undefeated at 5-0 in singles against SWAC opponents, primarily playing on court four. Helen Hernandez completed Jackson State’s trio of first-team honorees, going 4-0 at number five singles and partnering with Victoria Linkovski for a 4-2 doubles mark that ended with a two-match win streak.
Victoria Linkovski earned SWAC Newcomer of the Year honors and was selected to the All-SWAC second team after an undefeated run in singles play (3-0), including a decisive win against Mississippi Valley State. Mariia Iordanova rounded out Jackson State’s honorees by making second team at number two singles following a season where she posted a 3-1 record and closed out with victories over Alcorn and Alabama A&M.
The other schools recognized were Alabama State and Alabama A&M with three selections each, followed by Florida A&M with one selection.
This recognition underscores Jackson State’s continued strength within SWAC women’s tennis competition this season.
