Jackson State University head men’s basketball coach Trey Johnson announced on Apr. 17 two additions to his coaching staff for the upcoming 2026-27 season. Darrian Wilson has been named associate head coach, while Terrence McGrew will serve as Director of Basketball Operations.

Wilson most recently served as head men’s basketball coach at Itawamba Community College, where he compiled a record of 49-13 over two seasons. His tenure included a Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference championship and an appearance in the Region 23 championship game. In his first year as a head coach, Wilson led the team to 26 wins, followed by another successful season with 23 wins. Before becoming head coach, he was an assistant from 2022 to 2024 and contributed to three consecutive seasons with at least twenty victories while mentoring players such as All-American AJ Dent.

Wilson returns to Jackson State University after previously serving as a three-time team captain for the Tigers and earning his master’s degree in exercise science in 2022. He was also part of the team’s Southwestern Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship in 2021.

“I have had the pleasure of knowing Darrian since he was a player at Jackson State,” Johnson said. “He exemplifies everything a Tiger stands for. His extraordinary leadership skills, coupled with his passion for the game and for this university aligns wholeheartedly with who I am and what I want this program to stand for. He has proven to be a winner as a player and coach in such a short time, making him a no-brainer hire for me. I am absolutely thrilled to welcome him back into THEE Family.”

Johnson also announced that Terrence McGrew will join the staff after spending two seasons managing the men’s program, including one year as graduate manager during the last season. Previously, McGrew worked with Jackson State’s women’s basketball program.

“Terrence has been a reliable and trustworthy part of our program over the past two seasons,” Johnson said. “His eagerness and enthusiasm towards learning and growing is what I want in the people that surround myself and these young men. He represents the brand in a way that we all can be proud of.” The new hires join Tyler Adams and Kydarrius Williams, who are being retained from last year’s staff.
