Jackson State University lost an 8-7 game to Alabama State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference matchup at Braddy Field on April 18. The contest went into extra innings, with Alabama State securing the win in the tenth inning after a solo home run by Trey Callaway.
The game was notable for Jackson State pitcher Jayden Lopez, who struck out ten batters over six innings. Despite his strong performance, Lopez allowed six runs on six hits and did not factor into the decision. Relief pitcher Jaedeyn Edwards took the loss for Jackson State, pitching four innings and giving up two runs on three hits while striking out three.
Jackson State came from behind twice during the game. After taking a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning, they had to rally again in the eighth to tie it at seven runs each. This marked the third time in two weeks that Jackson State played extra innings during conference play.
Offensively, Edwin Lemus Hudson Jr. contributed two hits and scored twice for Jackson State. Tyshon Patty finished with two hits, one run scored, and one run batted in (RBI). Diego Melendez drove in three runs with a single hit during his three at-bats.
Key moments included Melendez’s two-RBI single and Patty’s RBI single as part of Jackson State’s comeback efforts. However, Alabama State responded each time before ultimately winning with Callaway’s home run.
The teams are scheduled to meet again for game three of their series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
