Jackson State University lost to Prairie View A&M 85-76 in overtime during a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) men’s basketball game held at the William J. Nicks Building on Thursday night.
The Tigers, now with a record of 9-19 overall and 8-7 in conference play, played without their second-leading scorer Jayme Mitchell Jr. Daeshun Ruffin led Jackson State with 28 points and six assists. Tamarion Hoover contributed 13 points off the bench, while Devin Ree recorded his first double-double for Jackson State with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Jackson State made 39.7 percent of its shots from the field and hit 34.6 percent from three-point range. The team also converted 77.3 percent of its free throws. Prairie View A&M finished shooting 36.1 percent from the floor, but was more efficient from beyond the arc at 47.8 percent and made 91.7 percent of its free throws.
Dontae Horn led Prairie View A&M (12-17, 7-9 SWAC) with a strong performance, scoring 26 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
In the first half, Jackson State shot better than Prairie View A&M from both the field and free throw line, overcoming a nine-point deficit late in the half by outscoring their opponent 12-1 before halftime and leading in rebounds.
During the second half, Jackson State improved its shooting to 50 percent from the floor and over 41 percent from three-point range, but Prairie View A&M kept pace by making all of its free throws and shooting well from long distance.
In overtime, Jackson State failed to make a basket and scored only one point on a free throw.
Jackson State will next play Texas Southern on Saturday in Houston.
