Jackson State falls to Alcorn State in SWAC matchup

Jackson State University lost to Alcorn State University 83-65 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) men’s basketball game held Saturday at the Davey L. Whitney Complex in Lorman, Mississippi.

The Tigers, now with a record of 9-18 overall and 8-6 in SWAC play, were led by Daeshun Ruffin who scored 21 points and had three assists. Other Jackson State players scoring in double figures included Dionjahe Thomas with 14 points, Jayme Mitchell Jr. with 13, and Jalen Tatum contributing 10 points off the bench.

Jackson State shot 38.9 percent from the field (21-of-54), made four of their 21 attempts from three-point range for a rate of 19 percent, and converted on 73.1 percent of their free throws (19-of-26). In comparison, Alcorn State finished shooting 41.4 percent from the floor (24-of-58), hit six out of 22 shots from beyond the arc for a percentage of 27.3, and made 76.3 percent of their free throws (29-of-38).

Tycen McDaniels was Alcorn State’s top performer with a double-double, recording 25 points and grabbing 14 rebounds as the Braves improved to a record of 7-19 overall and 6-8 in conference play.

In the first half, Jackson State shot just under 36 percent from the field and made two out of eleven three-point attempts. They were more successful at the free throw line, making twelve out of sixteen shots. Alcorn State shot slightly better from both the field and three-point range during that period.

After halftime, Jackson State improved its shooting to over 42 percent but continued to struggle from long distance, hitting only two out of ten attempts. The Tigers made seven out of ten free throws after halftime while Alcorn State increased its accuracy both from inside and outside the arc.

Jackson State will continue its season with two road games in Texas starting Thursday night.
