Jackson State University secured an 80-60 win over Florida A&M on Saturday night at the Lee E. Williams Athletics & Assembly Center, completing a regular season sweep in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The Tigers played without head coach Mo Williams, who missed the game due to illness.
Daeshun Ruffin led Jackson State with 25 points after returning from a two-game absence. He also recorded nine rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Jalen Tatum contributed 15 points in his first appearance since November 6, making five of eight shots from the field.
Three other Tigers reached double figures: Jayme Mitchell Jr. scored 14 points, Dorian McMillian added 13, and Dionjahe Thomas finished with 11 points and nine rebounds. Jackson State led by as many as 27 points late in the second half.
The Tigers shot 48.4 percent from the field and made five of sixteen attempts from three-point range. They converted nearly 79 percent of their free throws and outrebounded Florida A&M by a margin of 41-28. Florida A&M was held to just over 32 percent shooting from the floor and made only two three-pointers out of eleven attempts.
Micah Octave led Florida A&M with 16 points.
In the first half, Jackson State shot nearly 47 percent from the floor and hit four three-pointers while making all their free throws. In comparison, Florida A&M managed just over 32 percent shooting in that period. In the second half, Jackson State improved to an even 50 percent shooting while maintaining a strong presence at the free throw line.
Jackson State will play its next game against Bethune-Cookman on Monday night at home, with tipoff scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPNU.
