Jackson State University defeated Alabama A&M 6-0 in a conference softball game on April 17 at the JSU Softball Field in Jackson. The Tigers relied on strong pitching from Jorgina Gant and timely hitting to secure the win.
The victory is important for Jackson State, which improved its record to 20-18 overall and 12-5 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The win helps position the team as it heads into the final games of the regular season.
Jace Jackson opened scoring for Jackson State with a solo home run in the first inning. Ariana Murillo contributed with a two-run double in the second, while Brooklyn Morris added a two-run single in the fourth to extend the lead. The Tigers scored their final run off an Alabama A&M error in the sixth inning.
Offensively, Ka’Liyah Gipson went three-for-three with a double, two runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base. Avelina McLean recorded two hits including a double and scored once. Morris drove in two runs, while Murillo finished with one double and two RBI. In total, Jackson State collected ten hits during the game.
Gant pitched all seven innings for Jackson State, allowing only three hits and striking out seven batters without giving up any runs. This marked her second shutout of the season as she improved her record to nine wins and four losses.
Alabama A&M was limited to three hits by Grace Cruthis, Kali Austerman, and Destiny King. Kaylee Tatum took the loss after allowing six runs over six innings pitched.
Looking ahead, Jackson State will host its last home doubleheader of the season against Alabama A&M on Saturday afternoon at noon.
