U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith from Mississippi has collaborated with Senator Steve Daines of Montana to introduce a resolution that reiterates the United States’ support for the Geneva Consensus Declaration (GCD). This international agreement focuses on promoting women’s health and life-affirming policies.

The GCD asserts that there is no international right to abortion and emphasizes support for life, family, and national sovereignty. Initially signed by over 30 countries, including the United States in 2020, the U.S. withdrew from the agreement under President Biden’s administration in 2021.

Senator Hyde-Smith expressed her commitment to rejoining the GCD, stating, “After four dark years of ardent pro-abortion policies, we honor the chance to reassert that the United States will again embrace policies that promote women’s health, protect the right to life, and strengthen families.”

Senator Daines highlighted the principles upheld by the GCD: “The Geneva Consensus Declaration affirms basic principles that all life is sacred and there is no international right to abortion. It also declares that families must be protected and defends the sovereign right of nations to enact laws that advance these truths.”

The resolution, known as S.Con.Res.4, has additional support from Senators Tim Sheehy of Montana, James Lankford of Oklahoma, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, and Jim Banks of Indiana.

Hyde-Smith had previously cosponsored a resolution in 2023 urging President Biden to rejoin the GCD. During former President Trump’s administration, the U.S. played a leading role in promoting this declaration which aimed at enhancing women’s health while respecting national sovereignty.

The coalition formed under this declaration represents a diverse group of countries committed to mutual defense and furtherance of optimal women’s health and family values across various regions worldwide.
