U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) has introduced a resolution to honor the Mississippi state law that played a pivotal role in overturning Roe v. Wade. The announcement was made during a “Stand for Life” event, where Hyde-Smith, chair of the Senate Pro-Life Caucus, celebrated pro-life achievements.

The Mississippi Gestational Age Act, introduced by State Representative Becky Currie of Brookhaven, led to the 2022 U.S. Supreme Court decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Hyde-Smith highlighted this act as crucial in the movement’s progress and described it as a catalyst for significant change.

“This is an incredibly special week for pro-life Americans,” stated Hyde-Smith. “We have welcomed back a life-affirming administration with the second inauguration of President Trump.” She emphasized unity in Congress for advancing legislation like the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.

Hyde-Smith acknowledged the March for Life as an inspiration to continue advocating for stronger protections for unborn children and their mothers. She credited Representative Becky Currie with introducing the Gestational Age Act, which she read into the Congressional Record.

The resolution is cosponsored by U.S. Senators Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), John Hoeven (R-S.D.), Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-Kan.), Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.), and Mike Lee (R-Utah). It also receives support from March for Life Action and Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.

Following speeches on the Senate floor, there was a vote to advance the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (S.6). However, enough Democratic Senators voted to filibuster it despite support from Hyde-Smith and others.

“Every baby born alive deserves appropriate medical care necessary for a fighting chance to live,” said Hyde-Smith about her support for this legislation aimed at ensuring vulnerable infants receive proper care.
