U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith has been appointed as the chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies (THUD) for the 119th Congress. This new role adds to her responsibilities within the Senate Appropriations Committee.

In addition to her leadership of the THUD Appropriations Subcommittee, Hyde-Smith will serve on the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies (MilCon-VA) Appropriations Subcommittee. This assignment increases her involvement to six out of the twelve subcommittees under this Senate committee.

“I look forward to leading the Transportation-HUD appropriations subcommittee and producing funding bills in a timely and fiscally-responsible manner,” Hyde-Smith stated. She acknowledged potential challenges but expressed commitment to working diligently for both Mississippi and the nation. “I am also grateful to Chair Collins for this opportunity and appreciate her leadership of the committee very much.”

One of Hyde-Smith’s immediate tasks includes completing the FY2025 appropriations process initiated by both chambers last year. Additionally, she will begin work on drafting FY2026 appropriations bills aligned with priorities set by the new Trump administration.

As chair of THUD, Hyde-Smith will oversee appropriations affecting various federal agencies including the U.S. Department of Transportation, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Federal Aviation Administration, Federal Highway Administration, Maritime Administration, Federal Housing Administration, and Appalachian Development Highway System.

Hyde-Smith retains membership in other subcommittees such as Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration; Energy and Water Development; Homeland Security; Labor, Health and Human Services; Education; and Related Agencies.

The full roster for subcommittee assignments in the 119th Congress was announced by full committee Chair Susan Collins from Maine along with Vice Chair Patty Murray from Washington.
