Jackson State University’s women’s basketball team secured a 65-52 win over Texas Southern in Houston on Saturday. The victory was highlighted by Jaileyah Cotton’s double-double performance, recording 19 points and 11 rebounds. Three other players for Jackson State also reached double figures, with Derrica McCall contributing 15 points and four steals, and Mikayla Brown adding 12 points and six rebounds.
Defensively, Jackson State limited Texas Southern to just 17.4 percent shooting from three-point range and 29.1 percent overall from the field. The team forced 22 turnovers during the game.
Jackson State (11-17, 9-7 SWAC) started strong with a 6-0 run early in the first quarter and maintained a lead throughout the game. At the end of the first quarter, they were ahead 17-13. By halftime, after an additional scoring run and capitalizing on Texas Southern’s turnovers, Jackson State led 42-26.
The team continued to build its advantage in the third quarter before Texas Southern reduced the deficit slightly by the end of that period. However, Jackson State maintained control in the final quarter to secure the win.
Jaileyah Cotton’s performance stood out with her double-double effort. The team never trailed after gaining a first-quarter lead.
Jackson State will finish its regular season at home against UAPB on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
