Columbus High School secured a 52-38 victory over Holmes County Central High School in the MHSAA Boys Class 5A Basketball Championship on Saturday, March 7, 2026. The game took place at an undisclosed location.
After a close first quarter that ended with Columbus ahead 12-10, the team pulled away by dominating the second quarter 19-2. Columbus entered halftime with a commanding 31-12 lead. The key moment occurred midway through the second period when Columbus extended their lead from 16-10 to 31-10 with a decisive 15-0 run led by Tylan Brown, Michael Hood Jr., and Davie Verdell.
“Tylan Brown scored nine points during the burst, Verdell added a 3-pointer, and Columbus held Holmes County Central scoreless for more than seven minutes before Julius Mathis scored with 59 seconds left in the half,” according to the game summary.
Brown finished as Columbus’s top scorer with 17 points and eight rebounds. Verdell contributed 15 points, while Hood added 13 points and six rebounds. As a team, Columbus shot efficiently, making 20 of their 37 field goal attempts and limiting Holmes County Central to just 14 successful shots out of 46 attempts.
For Holmes County Central, L Crawford led all scorers with 20 points and made four three-pointers. Mathis provided six points and eight rebounds. Although Holmes County Central managed to reduce the deficit to eleven in the third quarter, they were unable to close the gap further.
The final box score reflected strong defensive play from Columbus, who recorded seven steals and forced twelve turnovers from their opponents.
Both teams displayed notable performances throughout different periods of the game but it was Columbus’s run before halftime that proved decisive in determining the outcome.
