2021-22 School Year: What were the backgrounds of MS School for the Blind and Deaf students?

Black students made up 69.5% of the 118 students enrolled in MS School for the Blind and Deaf schools during the 2021-22 school year, making them the most represented ethnicity, according to the Mississippi Department of Education.

This is a 6.5% increase over the previous school year.

Mississippi School for the Deaf had the highest enrollment in the district with 77 students.

A snapshot of MS School for the Blind and Deaf schools showed 69.5% of students were Black and 11% white.

MS School for the Blind and Deaf roughly covers two schools and has a main office in Jackson.

Mississippi has continually struggled with public education. The most recent Report Card on American Education, from a right-leaning think tank, gave the state a C-. This is consistent with ratings stretching back nearly a decade.

The nonpartisan Education Week also ranked Mississippi schools as C- in their most recent analysis.
